Letter to the editor

Dear Donnae Schuhltz,

Subject: New distractive driving law/ Bill 16.

My name is Brooke Wigmore, I am a 16 year old student at École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School. In my Humanities class we got told to write a letter to someone that it concerns with our opinion on an issue. I chose to write to you because this new bill means a lot to me.

I recently turned 16 a few months ago, so that put me into the position of being a “newer” driver. When I first heard about the new Bill (along with my friends) I heard of more restrictions than there really is, so I was not too thrilled to have to obey this law. But as I found out more about it I am actually very grateful for this law to come into effect. I do actually feel a lot safer when I am on the roads driving now. Before this bill came into effect I had to watch big trucks and other vehicles swerve all over the roads, doing 110 km/h down the highway. Before these last two weeks I was very nervous to get into a crash with another vehicle due to talking on the phone or even texting, but within these last two weeks I have felt a lot more safe because I have been starting to notice that people who are driving are actually staying in their lanes a lot better, instead of swerving around from side to side in their lane.

I do enjoy being able to drive and not go past someone with a phone up to their ears or looking down at their cell phones and texting. Knowing that people are actually paying attention to the road and all their other surroundings has been a pleasant change. I know that I am not the only person that feels this way about Bill 16. When people found out about the ticket price being $172 I think that it finally clicked in most people’s heads that they really shouldn’t be texting, talking on the phone, programming their GPS or even applying make-up in their car while it’s in drive on a road because it really isn’t safe at all.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter, because I really do agree with what has been done to make a change. Also to make everyone feel safe while doing the most dangerous thing in the world.

                                                                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                                                   BROOKE WIGMORE
